WINDS OF FAITH – History: The origins of the band go back to 2008 at William Jessup University, where the band members assisted in providing large-ensemble opportunities for instrumental music students. With the increase of student enrollment, the band no longer served as support for the college’s music department. Consequently, the band was dissolved at the end of 2015. Members enthusiastically voted to continue as a separate organization, and Winds of Faith was created.

The band, which rehearses weekly in Roseville, encourages musicians interested in joining the group to visit the website for information (windsoffaith.com).

Though the band performs primarily at churches, it has a wide-ranging repertoire from marches to movie themes, as well as seasonal music for holidays, and welcomes opportunities to perform at civic events or at other venues, such as senior communities. The band’s current season goes through June 2024, and organizations which are interested in the possibility of scheduling a performance can contact Janet McGovern at 650.207.5407.

Winds of Faith is a member of the SVSBA (Sacramento Valley Symphonic Band Association) which is comprised of 15 community Bands in and around the Sacramento area. They put on a yearly Concert Band Festival in Carmichael Park (5750 Grant Ave – Carmichael, CA), usually around the first weekend in June. Winds Of Fatih has performed in that Festival each year since it’s inception. A link to their official page: https://www.svsba.net/

Winds of Faith concerts are free to the public, but a freewill offering is taken to support the 35-member, all-volunteer band, which is directed by longtime music educator Ray Bernd.

WINDS OF FAITH DIRECTOR:

Ray Bernd

Ray was born and raised in the Camino/Placerville area in the California foothills. Active in both Music and FFA throughout High School. He attended CSU Chico and majored in Music Education and Saxophone performance. While in college, he thought it was important to have some knowledge in the various different music ensembles. So, he participated in A Capella Choir, Chamber Ensemble, Jazz Band, Orchestra, Opera Workshop, various Musical ‘pit’ Orchestras, Brass Choir, Marching Band and of course, the Symphonic and Concert Bands. Ray also performed 3 solo recitals on Saxophone, and was the first to perform solo works on Soprano Saxophone at the University. The opportunity came up during his time in college to direct the Marching Band/Pep Band (4 years), the Concert Band (1 year) and the 3rd Jazz Band (1 year). He was also the Jazz Ensemble and the Symphonic Band librarian for many years. This would all prove to be invaluable knowledge to use once he graduated college.

He has taught in various levels of public school – elementary classroom music through High School. Los Molinas schools, Lower Lake High School and Gilroy High School were his first three positions. In 1991, he started a 16-year run at Monroe Middle School in Campbell, CA. During that time, his Jazz Band, String Orchestras and Concert Bands performed often at local events and at Music festivals, and included 2 Concert Band performances in Disneyland. Aside from his time in public education, Ray was active in several community Bands. While in Campbell, he was a member of the Cupertino Symphonic Band, both as a player and director. More recently, he has played with the Auburn Winds, Yolo County Band and Winds Of Faith. For many years, his Saxophone Quartet – the ‘Central Coast Sax Quartet’ – was a regular performer at the Gilroy Garlic Festival. He has continued to run and organize the San Jose Saxophone Christmas (since 1994) and the Sacramento Saxophone Christmas (since 2011). With all the ensembles he has been involved with, it has furthered his opportunity to write and arrange music, primarily for the Saxophone Ensembles. His last position was in Woodland teaching Elementary Band.

When not involved in Music, Ray can be found following his other interests – Gardening, Cooking, and collecting DVDs.
